There is a secret naval base somewhere in or around Wellfleet Harbor.
How long the base has been in existence in the subject of some debate, but it is safe to say that it has been in operation since 2020. You will not find this base on any map. You will not find any references to it in official documentation of any kind. But over the years, rumors, as well as odd sightings by tourists and townsfolk all suggest that small base of tiny submarines is operating deep within the marshy landscape of Massachusetts.
But how could this be? Submarines are enormous vessels that require deep depths and wide berths. They would be easily spotted, photographed. But there has been no evidence.
That is because SUBASE Wellfleet - as it has come to be known - is the home to a revolutionary type of underwater - a microsubmarine. These tiny submarines - known officially as unmanned or autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs)
Over the years, as Wellfleet and Cape grew into a major hub of seafaring commerce, these phenomena were spotted by seafarers, who gave them many names - sprites, tidal fairies, witchlights. But there is one name that we believe best suits these fascinating and illusive beings.
